Image’s Bitter Root Planted at Legendary Pictures for New Film

Deadline reported exclusively on March 27 that Legendary Pictures has acquired the film rights to Image Comics’ horror-action series Bitter Rootby David F. Walker, Chuck Brown & Sanford Greene.

Set during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, the series follows the troubled Sangerye Family, a once-great family of monster hunters torn apart by tragedies and conflicting moral codes — and which must come together to save humanity from an unimaginable evil.

Per the article: Bitter Root joins Hollywood’s robust vein of comic book properties about maverick-minded investigators who challenge otherworldly threats — a list that includes Men in Black (with its fourth film on the way), Hellboy (with a third film due April 12), Blade (three films to date), ConstantineRIPDDellamorte Dellamore, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The sub-genre’s built-in appeal include its edgier story terrain (with occult and sci-fi trappings) and less-routine aesthetic options (with, say, steampunk designs offering more vanguard opportunities than another batch of superhero battle-suits).”
