NEW COMIC BOOK DAY — OCTOBER 21, 2026

NEW COMIC BOOK DAY — OCTOBER 21, 2026

It’s Wednesday, which means New Comic Book Day at State of Comics!

And this week, we've got a little bit of everything.

DC's Absolute Universe continues with Absolute Green Arrow #6, Marvel's Avengers: Armageddon reaches its fifth issue, and we've got a brand-new horror series called It Demands Sacrifice #1 that looks like it belongs on your October reading list.

There's also an Amazing Spider-Man Halloween Special, more Absolute Flash, Detective Comics, G.I. Joe, and plenty more.

Here are some of the books worth talking about this week.

ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW #6

The Green Arrow Killer is finally revealed.

And that's not even the biggest news surrounding this book.

Absolute Green Arrow was originally announced as a six-issue miniseries. But DC has officially extended it for another six issues, bringing the series to 12 issues total.

That's a pretty big deal.

Writer Pornsak Pichetshote and artist Rafael Albuquerque have taken Oliver Queen into a much darker corner of DC's Absolute Universe, with Green Arrow, Black Canary, Solomon Grundy, and Hector Hammond all caught in a violent mystery.

Issue #6 brings those characters together for a bloody confrontation, finally revealing who's behind the killings.

And apparently, not everyone is making it out alive.

This was supposed to be the ending. Instead, it's becoming the beginning of something bigger.

If you've been following Absolute Green Arrow, this is one you won't want to miss.

AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON #5

The Marvel Universe is about to change.

We've been following Avengers: Armageddon for months, and this week Chip Zdarsky brings the five-issue event to its conclusion.

And Marvel isn't being subtle about how important this story is.

Following Red Hulk's destructive campaign and the emergence of David Colton, the world has reached a breaking point. Superheroes are no longer universally seen as protectors, and humanity is beginning to turn against them.

The Avengers are facing something they can't necessarily punch their way out of.

What happens when the world decides it doesn't want superheroes anymore?

That's the question at the center of this finale.

And here's why this issue matters beyond the event itself.

On November 4, Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto are launching an entirely new Avengers #1 featuring Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and a mysterious new addition.

That series picks up directly from the aftermath of Armageddon.

So this isn't just another event ending.

It's setting the stage for the next era of Marvel's Avengers.

IT DEMANDS SACRIFICE #1

Okay. This one is weird.

And considering we're less than two weeks away from Halloween, the timing couldn't be better.

It Demands Sacrifice #1 is a new four-issue horror miniseries from BAD IDEA, written by Philip Gelatt (Love, Death & Robots) and David Yarovesky (Brightburn), with art by Adam Pollina.

The main character?

A baby goat named Bronson.

Yes. A goat.

Bronson lives on a quiet farm with his family, spending his days trying to prove that being the smallest member of the herd doesn't make him any less capable than his siblings.

Then a satanic murder cult shows up.

And everything goes horribly wrong.

The cult kidnaps Bronson's family, intending to sacrifice them in a ritual that will summon an ancient demon into our world.

Now the smallest, least intimidating goat imaginable has to find a way to save everyone.

Think cute animal protagonist meets completely unhinged supernatural horror.

This is absolutely NOT an all-ages animal adventure. It's a mature horror story involving cults, violence, and demonic rituals.

And somehow, putting an adorable baby goat in the middle of all that makes the premise even stranger.

It's a brand-new #1, and one of the more unusual horror books we've seen this October.

I'm interested.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: HALLOWEEN SPECIAL #1

Halloween is right around the corner, and Spider-Man is getting his own holiday special.

Unfortunately for Peter Parker, Hallows' Eve is back.

She's planning what might be her biggest heist yet, and if Spider-Man can't stop her, the consequences could threaten the entire Marvel Universe.

But that's not all.

There's also the possibility of a new Spider-Man costume, some hidden surprises, and a Halloween-themed backup story featuring familiar villains.

Writer Justina Ireland and artist Mike Hawthorne are handling the main story.

And unlike some of the other books we're discussing this week, this is a one-shot, not the beginning of another ongoing series.

So if you want something fun and seasonal to add to your Wednesday stack without committing to another monthly title, here you go.

ABSOLUTE FLASH #20

DC's Absolute Universe keeps moving forward this week with Absolute Flash #20.

One of the things I've enjoyed about the Absolute line is that these books aren't simply retelling the same stories we've already read.

They're taking familiar characters, changing their circumstances, and exploring what happens when the things that traditionally define them are taken away.

Absolute Flash has been doing exactly that with Wally West.

If you're already following this version of the Flash, the next chapter is here.

And if you've been curious about the Absolute Universe, ask us about the different series. There's a lot to choose from, and you don't have to start with Batman.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1114

The Batman: Bad Seeds story continues in Detective Comics #1114.

Gotham is facing another dangerous threat, and Batman finds himself dealing with an increasingly complicated situation involving the city's enemies and allies.

One thing worth mentioning is that DC has several Batman stories happening simultaneously right now.

You've got the main Batman series, Detective Comics, Absolute Batman, and the wider Bat-Family titles.

They're not all telling the same story.

If you've been reading Detective Comics, this week's issue continues that storyline.

AND THERE'S A LOT MORE THIS WEEK

Those are only a few of the books hitting the shelves today.

We've also got:

  • G.I. Joe #27

  • Batman/Superman: World's Finest #56

  • Action Comics #1103

  • Doomquest #5

  • Nightwing #143

  • Fury of Firestorm #7

  • Dark Knights of Steel II #4

  • Superman Unlimited #18

  • Redcoat #21

  • If Destruction Be Our Lot #5

There's plenty to choose from, whether you're following your favorite ongoing series or looking for something completely different.

And that's why we put these blogs together every Wednesday.

We're not trying to list every comic that came through the door.

We want to talk about the books, what they're actually about, and why you might want to read them.

DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START?

Ask us.

Seriously.

Maybe you want to explore DC's Absolute Universe. Maybe you're interested in what happens to the Avengers after Armageddon. Or maybe a horror comic starring a baby goat sounds like exactly the kind of strange thing you want to read.

That's the fun of comics.

You don't have to know decades of continuity, and you don't need to have a pull list a mile long.

Tell us what you enjoy, and we'll help you find something worth reading.
