NEW COMIC BOOK DAY — SEPTEMBER 23, 2026
It’s Wednesday, which means NEW COMIC BOOK DAY at State of Comics!
September 23 brings another big week of new comics to the shop from Marvel, DC, Image, IDW, BOOM! Studios, Dark Horse, and more.
Every week we’re going to use this blog to highlight some of the books we think are worth knowing about. Not every variant. Not every single book on the wall. Just a closer look at some of this week’s new comics, what they’re actually about, and where you can jump in.
And starting this week, we’re also adding New Binge Reads for anyone looking for graphic novels, trades, manga, and complete stories they can sit down and read without waiting for the next issue.
Here’s what’s new this week:
STAR TREK #1
If you’ve been looking for a place to jump into Star Trek comics, you’ve got one this week.
Star Trek #1 starts a brand-new series with Captain Seven of Nine commanding the Enterprise-G on a mission beyond the known galaxy.
The crew discovers three seemingly untouched Class-M planets that could become a new home for the Avuran people, whose own planet is dying. It sounds like exactly the kind of discovery Starfleet is supposed to be looking for.
Except something isn’t right. Structures disappear. Strange artifacts start showing up. Members of the crew lose stretches of time. And it becomes pretty clear that these planets aren’t as empty as they first appeared.
Christopher Cantwell and Dennis Menheere are kicking this series off with more of a mystery/thriller feel, which I think is a pretty interesting direction.
More importantly, this is a new #1. You don’t need to figure out where issue #327 fits into 50 years of continuity. You can start here.
MUPPETS TAKE THE MARVEL UNIVERSE #1
I mean...come on. The Muppets in the Marvel Universe.
For the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show, Chip Zdarsky and Pete Woods are bringing Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Rowlf, Beaker, Bunsen, and the rest of the crew into Marvel.
The story starts when Rowlf gets kidnapped by Mojo, which somehow leads to Kermit and company crossing paths with Spider-Man, Black Panther, Emma Frost, and more. And because apparently nobody in the Marvel Universe learned anything from the Hulk, Bunsen and Beaker get access to gamma radiation and Pym Particles.
This is an oversized one-shot, so there’s no commitment to another series or five more issues. It’s one complete Muppets/Marvel story.
Sometimes comics are allowed to just be fun. This looks fun.
ABSOLUTE BATMAN #24
If you’ve been reading Absolute Batman, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta continue building out a Batman universe that has become very different from the one most of us grew up reading.
Issue #24 continues to dig into Bruce, his family, and the people closest to him as his fight becomes increasingly personal There’s also the growing mystery surrounding Absolute Bat, which adds another piece to what Snyder and Dragotta have been building throughout the series.
We’ve talked about the Absolute books quite a bit at the store because they’ve been a really easy way for people to get back into DC—or start reading DC for the first time.
You know Batman. You don't need to know everything that's happened to Batman since 1939. That's basically the point.
HELLRAISER: RESURRECTIONS — HELL’S COUNCIL #1
Horror readers have a pretty interesting one this week.
Hellraiser is returning to comics with Hellraiser: Resurrections, beginning with Hell’s Council #1.
And there’s an important distinction with this series: this isn't issue #1 of a five-issue miniseries. BOOM! is releasing five interconnected one-shots, with each one helping bridge the gap between the classic Hellraiser movies and a new ongoing Hellraiser comic coming this winter.
The first one brings back Butterball following his apparent death in Hellbound: Hellraiser II. He's discovered and slowly brought back to health by a mysterious woman, but while she's repairing his body, she's also digging into his mind.
So if you're a Hellraiser fan, this is basically the beginning of BOOM!'s larger return to that world. And if you just want some horror heading into October, the timing couldn't be much better.
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #23
The Amnesty storyline wraps up this week in Justice League Unlimited #23.
Mark Waid and Dan Mora have spent this story exploring the League's attempt to give some of its villains another chance.
Now we get to see how well that worked.
Batman and Lex Luthor finally come to a head, the League is forced into a position where it may have to imprison one of its own, and the issue sets up who will lead the Justice League into what comes next.
If you’ve been following Justice League Unlimited, this is the payoff to the current storyline rather than just another issue in the middle of the run.
NEW BINGE READS
We’re adding something new to these weekly posts.
Not everybody wants to read single issues, and not everybody wants to wait another month to find out what happens next.
So every week we're also going to highlight our New Binge Reads.
These are the new graphic novels, trade paperbacks, manga, collected editions, and other books arriving at State of Comics that give you a little more to sit down and actually READ.
Maybe you want an entire story.
Maybe you missed a series in single issues and want to catch up.
Maybe you just want something to read for a few hours without immediately hitting a “TO BE CONTINUED.”
That's what this section is for.

THERE’S A LOT MORE THIS WEEK
We're obviously not going to write 500 words about every comic that comes through the door.
These are just some of the books we're highlighting.
There are plenty more new releases on the wall this week from Marvel, DC, Image, IDW, BOOM!, Dark Horse, and other publishers, with everything from superheroes and horror to sci-fi, fantasy, licensed books, and indie comics.
And honestly, finding the book you weren't planning on buying is still one of the best parts of New Comic Book Day.
