State of Comics Statement on Diamond Comic Distributors Filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
On January 29, 2024, Diamond Comic Distributors announced that it has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it seeks a buyer for its remaining business operations. The company, a long-standing pillar of the comic book distribution industry, has faced significant challenges in recent years, including the departure of major publishers and shifting market dynamics. According to Diamond’s statement, if a buyer is not secured by April 1, 2025, operations will cease, and approximately 168 employees will be laid off.
At State of Comics, our experience with Diamond has been challenging. Issues such as poor shipping quality and inconsistent customer service have long been concerns. While Diamond has historically supported comic shops through financial hardships, the company has failed to implement meaningful improvements post-COVID-19 shutdowns. The loss of key publishers should have been a turning point for Diamond to evolve and strengthen its role in the industry, yet those necessary changes never materialized.
Given the uncertainty surrounding Diamond’s future, we fear the company may cease operations after April 1, 2025. As a result, we will no longer be listing Diamond-exclusive publishers for pre-orders. While we will continue to accept Diamond Publishers for Subscription Pull Lists, we will not be taking pre-paid orders at this time to protect our customers from potential disruptions in fulfillment.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and update our community as more information becomes available. Our priority remains ensuring the best possible service and experience for our customers.
